Both Roger and Jessica are Certified Specialists in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. There are over 200,000 lawyers who are members of the California Bar. Only 798 are certified as specialists in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law and who may legally use the term “specialist” in describing and advertising their practice expertise. The certification program was created in the early 1970s. Its goal is to help consumers find attorneys who have demonstrated ability and experience in specialized fields of law. To qualify as a certified specialist, an attorney must be an active member of the State Bar, have substantial experience in the field, pass a written exam, complete approved legal education programs and be evaluated by judges and other attorneys. Once certified the attorney must annually take continuing education courses in the specialty and re-qualify every five years. Alice W. O’Sullivan, chair of the Board of Legal Specialization recently stated, “Certifying specialists provides the consumer with the best protection. The consumer can be assured that such attorneys have met rigorous standards concerning both knowledge and practice.” For more information on the specialists program go to www.calbar.org.
